Kentucky Raised, LA based Hollywood Stylist (and die hard UK basketball fan)
1. Tell us your name, where you were born, and your first memory you have from where you began! Cat Wright. Paducah, Kentucky. My first memory is probably when I was about four years old and my mom and I were swinging on the same swing in the backyard and broke it. My dad probably caught the blame for that one! 2. What were the overlaying cultural themes in your family? How did that align or differ to the communities you were surrounded by?
I grew up in a pretty conservative family and that was normal for the area I lived in. We went to church every Sunday morning and then the whole family would meet at my grandma’s for fried chicken, white beans and cornbread.
3. What did you like least about where you grew up? What did you like most?
I’d say my least favorite thing about where I grew up is something I didn’t even recognize until I moved away and experienced different cultures, viewpoints and ways of living.
I did like that basically my entire family was within driving distance so we were all very involved in each other’s lives when I was a kid.
4. What was the first big idea you ever had? Did it come to fruition in some sense?
When I was in 5th grade my mom and step-dad took me to San Diego on vacation and I was absolutely obsessed. Ever since that trip I was always going to move to California and as I got older it was LA...and here I am 🙂
5. Who influenced your taste in expression as a child? How so?
My dad, and he would probably cringe to hear that! Growing up, he would always dress and do things a little outside the norm. Long hair, cowboy hats, stuff that really embarrassed me as a kid (which I think he loved) that I find really endearing as an adult. He has always encouraged me to be different, now he might feel that advice has backfired...
6. What was the first full album you purchased/found and couldn’t get enough of? What did it make you feel?
I think it was Tim McGraw “Not a Moment Too Soon." I was just so happy I could listen to my favorite song over and over again instead of calling in to request it on the radio.
7. What hobbies, sports, events, arts, were you drawn to before the age of 10? Do you feel like you’re still interacting with these same genres in your current time in life? Do you miss any of them?
Growing up in Kentucky, I have always been a HUGE Kentucky basketball fan. I was crying over losses in elementary school and I went to my first game at Rupp Arena when I was in 7th grade; then the SEC Tournament became a family tradition. Basketball season is my favorite time of year and I think now that I’m so far away, watching the games kind of makes me feel that connection to everyone back home...like the thing we have in common. I also still cry about it and after we lost in the tournament last year I finally got the nickname “Cry Baby Cat.” Thanks Johnny.
9. Where do you go to find your peace?
I like to listen to music and drive North on the PCH.
10. What is a lifelong goal you can’t wait to start? What is it about it that brings you to life?
I’ve always wanted to write a book but I’m still taking suggestions for a topic.
11. Where do you wish to travel to that you have never been? Why?
I am DYING to go to Australia, I think that’s the next big trip I take if we can ever travel again! I love all of the fashion happening there right now; some of my favorite brands and designers are Australian.
"And I’m going to be basic and say I really want to see a kangaroo 🙂"
12. How do you connect best with other people? Nothing beats a rooftop at sunset with a glass of wine. 13. Favorite song of the moment? Anything by Dua Lipa but “Don’t Start Now” has definitely been the song of quarantine. 14. What are you most proud of at this exact moment in time? Our industry has taken a massive hit with this virus and lockdown. As things start to open back up, I feel so lucky every time I get an email or confirmation on a new job and am just so happy any day I am working. I think about how emotionally taxing this year has been on all of us and, although it’s not over yet, I am honestly relieved to have come out on the other side without having a complete meltdown. 16. What are the qualities that you value most in a friend today? I’d say honesty and follow-through. I think the most important quality in any relationship is to do what you say you’re going to do.
17. How do you find your calm in tumultuous times? Phone calls with my mom.
18. What is your current greatest fear? Regret. 19. What is your current greatest strength? Looking on the bright side. 20. What brings you the most joy?
Working. 2020 has definitely reminded me how much I love my job and the relationships/friendships it has given me.
21. Who would you have coffee with dead or alive? Why?
I think my great-uncle who passed away last year. He lived in Palm Springs when I moved to LA, so he was the only family I had out here. I would drive out there for the weekend and just hang out with him and his friends and never wanted to leave. Sometimes I would try to cook for him and he would make fun of me and say it would have just been cheaper to go to a restaurant. 🙂 Although I didn’t know him that well when I was a kid, he became such an important part of my life as an adult and I miss having conversations about life with him. I still have his old voicemails.
22. Who do you find most inspiring at this current time in your life?
Cleo Wade.
23. Do you have a morning or night routine? If so, why are they important to you?
During the week - if I’m not working - I wake up around 7:30, have two cups of coffee while I catch up on the news and take a pilates class.
24. How do you best honor yourself?
Sometimes just using the word “no."
25. What is the craziest thing you want to do?
Buy a house in LA. INSANE...Am I right?
26. What is your favorite meal to cook when you need something fast, and when you are ready to invest in the kitchen?
If I need something fast I'll the make the Le Bowl from Zinque and as far as investing in the kitchen... I don’t.
27. What is your favorite question to ask others?
Anything music related, I think that’s the best way to discover different bands.
28. What are your favorite travel tips?
Pick a few things must-do things or places to go if you’re visiting somewhere new but don’t pack your itinerary too tight. Some of my favorite travel memories have come from having no plans at all.
29. And of course, what is your go-to travel snack?
Pizza flavored Combos.
